Built into the main stone gateway at the heart of the ancient city of York, this historic inn boasts beautiful, well-appointed modern accommodation and free parking. In all of England, there can be few taverns blessed with such a superb location. Built into the city wall at Bootham Bar, the Lion and Lamb is right in the centre of this magnificent city, just a few minutes’ walk from all of York’s main attractions, including York Minster. Up the steep staircases of this Georgian property, there are 12 beautifully decorated rooms. Some overlook the gardens and city walls; others look down onto busy High Petergate. At the top is the attic, a lovely hideaway where you can almost touch the medieval stone walls of the ancient fortifications. Enjoy good home-cooked food and an ever-changing selection of real ales and premium continental lagers, together with a good wine and champagne list.
The inn stands at the original Porta Principalis (main gate) into Eboracum, a fort and city in Roman Britain, today known as York. Fire ravaged the inn when the Earl of Manchester's men bombarded York in 1644. Over a hundred years later, the Lamb and Lion was rebuilt by a wealthy butter merchant in 1756. Today, the inn is one of the finest in this medieval city. With dark corridors, staircases and little snugs everywhere, the Lamb and Lion perfectly recalls the atmosphere of a time gone by. The inn offers good beer, good simple food, beautiful bedrooms and an unrivalled view of the Minster from the beer garden. The Lamb and Lion also offers guests free parking in the centre of York. Please reserve your car parking permit with the inn when making your reservation. The Lamb and Lion is a member of Classic British Hotels.
